I’m a long-time fan of block print as it it evokes a sense of slow beauty, global craftsmanship, and effortless elegance. It adds such depth and character to whatever it is it’s a part of, from cloth napkins and tablecloths to pretty summer dresses and curtains. My first block print purchase was a set of cloth cocktail napkins about 15 years ago and I have been obsessed ever since. My bedroom curtains and many throw pillows are block print. While I know you can’t be block printing all day, every day, with everything, a bit of it here and there adds such whimsy. Block print has become a beloved staple in both wardrobes and interiors over the past many years. But where did this centuries-old technique begin? How did it go from a traditional craft to a coveted design trend? Well, I was super keen to understand the history behind it, so I did a bit of homespun research. So, for all you interested folks, let’s dive into the colorful world of block printing.

What Is Block Print?

Block printing is one of the oldest methods of textile printing, where artisans use hand-carved wooden blocks to stamp intricate designs onto fabric. Each color and motif is stamped separately, requiring skill, patience, and precision. The result? A beautifully imperfect pattern that’s rich in texture and character.

Block Print Origins: A Craft Rooted in India and China

Block printing dates back thousands of years, with its earliest roots in China, dating back to around 220 AD. But it was in India, particularly in the regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat, that the technique truly became magical. Westerners were smitten with the exotic patterns and vivid colors, leading to a booming demand for “chintz” (a printed cotton fabric often created using block printing). Brands like Anthropologie and Serena & Lily (and hey, West Elm where I got my fabulous bedroom drapes) have helped usher block print into modern lifestyle aesthetics.
